Learning Reflection
Since the first class I knew about this
course that what we will to learn in this class? So the name of class is
“Discourse Approach in Reading”
Next week I
learnt first unit is a “Recount” in unit we learnt or knew about how to write
past experience or events over time so we using language to keep the past alive
and help us in to interpret experience. We write recount when want to tell
activity almost is diary, or when we recording we call it report, and we write
from imagine.
Pattern of
recount is orientation, events and reorientation. In hand out we did exercise
about recount not only wrote recount but also we read the passage then answer
the questions and practice a lots for accuracy.
Next
unit we learnt about “Narrative” it is about entertaining how to write story
sometime it made from experience or imagination. There are many types of
narrative i.e. fairy story, mysteries, science fiction, romance, horror,
adventure etc. the pattern it like a recount.
In this unit we learnt story named
“Secret” by Tim Watson. The story told me about problem in family so in story
the girl that has the problem name “Kylie” she was young one day she must to
move to live with her mother and new father name Philip. Kylie felt left out
from her mother and Philip activities. She becomes interested in the chickens
in the yard. Somehow her secret helps her to felt less lonely. She found second
egg and then found out where others are being laid by an unhealthy-looking hen.
Philip had shown Kylie and her mother the round zinc cover of the bore well she
was forbidden to left into the lid, every day she sat out under the grapevine
with her album but in album was not one of her father.
Two weekends passed, ten eggs came to be
secreted. Kylie watches the hen sitting, take the lid off the well. She started
to go down the well with her photo album every day, watched Philip and her
mother wonders why her father is not with them and Philip discovers her in the
well and hits her, Kylie throws the chicks down to the well and she hits the
hen and throw it down to the well too. She chooses one special photo which
makes her feel good. Kylie cuts off her head from the special photo and throws
it away. Made a group circle 5 people and discussed about three people in the
story.
From story I thought it was about the
problem in the family so her mother has a new husband and hasn’t time to take
care, talk, and do something together therefore, Kylie felt alone and they
should be solve the problem by spent time together, eating together and talk a
lot perhaps it made Kylie didn’t felt alone.
And then techer gave us to made a storybook name "The Secrets" for 2-3 people in one group.
Next unit “Descriptive” we knew about
how to say what a person, thing or place is like. In hand out we learnt about
Komodo dragon in the passage describe about everything about the Komodo i.e.
told me about what is the Komodo dragon? Where can I find it? About appearance,
sense and habitat including diet.
Text 2 first read the text then guess
the title of the text in the text describe the place, activity, and the others
if we practice a lot, you will be understand more and more. After learnt this
unit you can describe a person that they look like.
Next “Procedure” it is about something
is accomplished through a sequence of actions or step. It told me to get things
done or told me how to make something.
After that teacher gave us to made video
how to cooking and brought to present in the class.
Next “Comparison and Contrast” it is
similarity and differences between two thing or more. In this unit we learnt
about how to compare things, person and places. So it has similarity marker
that show comparison
( both,
same, similar, similarity, identical. Like etc. ) and marker that show contrast
( to differ, to contrast, unlike, difference etc. ) it helps me to understand
more.
In hand out we did the exercise a lot for
practice to understand when we read the text we can understand easily.
Next “Cause and Effect” in this unit we
must to understand the passage then find cause of the passage, find the effect
too and then we can wrote the diagram to show relationship between cause and
effect. Case and effect is used to show facts or concepts result due to other
facts, event or concepts. After that we did exercise in hand out for practice a
lot.
Next “Definition and Classification” it
helps your academic reading. Definition and Classification
you will also fine that writers use classification to divide general concept
into a number of different types. So you can found some word that show you
about definition or classification example is, is defined as, i.e., categories
etc.
In this hand out we did the exercise so
we must to found Definition Marker, technical term, definitions for example
1. A
disease may be endemic; in the other words, it is always present in a community
or region, but in relatively low number s of case.
*Definition marker is “in the other
words”
*Technical Term is “endemic”
*Definitions is “it is always present
in a community or region, but in relatively low number s of case”
So it helps us to understand more and
more and easy to found the meaning of the words.
Next “Exemplification” so in this unit we
knew the purpose of adding more information, shows the meaning or truth of
something. The good examples are logically related to the topic, and provide the
mental imagery. The phrase such as for example, for instance, such as, in particular
and in fact.
In hand out after we knew what is the exemplification
we can read the text then we can divided and made the diagrams to show the
related in the text. In this context “College Student’s Pressures” it can wroye diagram as follows below.
Finally the last unit “Problem and
Solution” if you read the passage and look for both a problem and solution, you
will found the way so solve the problem and you can write the diagram to show related
between problem and solution. So in this unit has a discourse marker too, problem
markers are burden, danger, risk, concern, problem, lack, excess, difficultly
etc. solution markers are to address, to ease, to improve, to solve, to
relieve, to cope with etc.
In hand out we did the exercise too so
read the texts and found the problem marker and solution marker. The last exercise
read the passages and tries to thought, made a title of the passages wrote main
idea and drew the graphic organizer to shoe related of the problem and solution
of the text that we read it.
